The process of making roof tiles - the artisan's method

Made from locally sourced natural ingredients and hand laid by artisan and artisan hands. All roof tiles are poured with the heart and soul of their creators, who seek to redefine the rules of creativity and design every day.

The wide range of colors and shapes offering near limitless design potential, combined with a commitment to exceptional quality, it's no surprise that roof tiles are one of the most popular roofing materials chosen by Australians.

Terracotta tiles have been used since ancient times, and though the centuries have passed, the creation process has remained largely unchanged. Terracotta manufacturing is one of the few surviving industries in which humans still play an integral role in its formation. No mass production, no shortcuts; each tile is crafted by an artisan passionate about bringing your roof to life.

Terracotta roof tiles go through a significant journey from first harvest to final installation.

The first step begins with the spring and summer collections. Terracotta pottery is harvested from terracotta clay deposits across Australia. The sites are naturally occurring and regenerative, meaning there is zero risk of environmental damage during harvesting.

The clay is then molded into a smooth chocolate texture, often with the aid of molds and other helpful aids to bring the final design to life. This is an extensive process as there are usually a large number of tiles that need to be shaped at any one time.

After the tiles are shaped, the still-damp clay is moved into a kiln, where temperatures reach a whopping 1,000 degrees Celsius. Depending on design specifications, this process can take days or even weeks for the clay to set.

After drying, the roof tiles go through several quality assurance tests before being distributed. They simulate real-world events and emergencies, such as fires, storms, and heavy rain. Successful batches are diverted to public distribution, and those that fail are recycled and repurposed, so there is no waste.

Concrete roof tiles have become a popular contemporary alternative to terracotta roof tiles since they were first widely used in the early 20th century. Regarded for its amazing strength and variety of design options, concrete brick is a fast-growing modern choice for homeowners worldwide.

The process of making concrete roof tiles begins with collecting smooth sand harvested from natural deposits; filtering the sand to remove large objects such as rocks and other debris. From there, the prepared sand is mixed with other basic ingredients, including cement, water and iron oxides, which create specific colors. Once the mixture is mixed, concrete is born.

The raw concrete is then ready to be molded into roof tiles. This is achieved by injecting the concrete into an extruder which compresses the product into a continuous sheet. Machines then meticulously craft and cut the panels with consistent precision, making each product perfectly uniform.

Once formed, the concrete blocks are heated in large ovens; the time they spend inside depends on their shape and can vary from a few hours to a full day.

Once dry, they undergo extensive quality assurance testing, including visual inspection and environmental hazard testing. If the batch is successful, they will proceed to public distribution.

Roof tiles have the ability to unlock the unique beauty of your home, creating a truly one-of-a-kind effect. You can take pride in knowing your roof tiles were lovingly crafted and installed by Australian artisans with a passion for taking your home into the next generation of design.
